The Sundance Area Chamber of Commerce is a driving force for building a strong economy. Officer Biographies

steve lenzSteve Lenz, President

Steve is currently consulting as Business Development Manager for several businesses in Sundance.  He volunteers in Community Development for the City of Sundance and the Sundance Area Chamber of Commerce. In his most notable recent successes, Steve has orchestrated the Sundance Winter Festivals and Sundance Beer Festivals which have brought in thousands of folks to the Sundance community. Steve has developed a monthly, reoccurring Festival Initiative Plan which brings one major event each month to the downtown area in Sundance.  
He and his wife Kathy have owned, operated and started businesses for over 25 years in Sundance including Black Iron Guns & Ammo, Off the Grid Sports, Sundance Dillon's Hardware, Mountain View Campground, Country Cottage & Yogurt Garden, Sundance Subway, and a food truck called Chuckwagon Concession Co. Of the over 180 people employed by this prolific entrepreneur and his family; approximately 150 high school kids experienced their “first job” in one or more of these numerous businesses.
Steve has been married 31 years to his wife, Kathy. They have three children and six grandchildren, all of who work and reside in the Sundance area.


dan fairbanksDan Fairbanks, Vice President

Dan serves as Vice President of the Sundance Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as Chairman of the Tourism Committee. He is also active on the Board of Directors of the Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association. Highly committed to increasing exposure of Sundance, he has been instrumental in obtaining grant funding and securing promotional opportunities. He has also portrayed Sheriff Ryan in Sundance’s popular “Sip N Walk Historical Tour”.

Dan and his wife Sharon built Bearlodge Mountain Resort four years ago on 94 beautiful, secluded acres within Sundance.

Having been married 6 years, they share 5 children, 3 grandchildren and one lively dog. 

jim durfeeJim Durfee, Treasurer

Jim Durfee is a native of Sundance, graduating from Sundance High School in 1976 and then from the University of Wyoming in 1980 with a BS in Finance. Jim has been an institution at the Sundance State Bank for thirty-six years and he has been the President since 1987. Few are the residents of Northeast Wyoming who haven’t benefited from Jim’s leadership role at the Sundance State Bank.  He also served as President and Director of the Wyoming Bankers Association.

Jim is very dedicated to Sundance and Crook County; as evidenced by his four decades of leading, serving and volunteering in many organizations and events.   

Jim is married to Kim; they have two boys, three grandkids, three step grandkids and two step great grand kids.  

dorothy greenwoodDorothy Greenwood, Secretary

Dorothy was born and raised in Crook County and is a Sundance High School alumni. She performed as a comedian for many years, as well as owning several small businesses.

Dorothy and her husband Barry Floyd are retired and spent 8 years full time RVing before returning to live in Sundance.


She serves on the Crook County Museum Board and was instrumental in creating the Sip and Walk Living History tours. Dorothy and Barry share 5 sons and raft of grandchildren. 

Contract Staff Biography

jamie jessenJamie Jessen, Administrative & Communications Support

Jamie is originally from South Dakota and moved to Sundance 2 years ago after getting married. She loves the beautiful area and can’t imagine calling any other place home. 

She has worked with people and businesses for the last 10+ years, including 6 years as a full time graphic designer and 4+ years in the tourism industry. Jamie has degrees in both Graphic Design and Photography from Black Hills State University and took a few marketing classes that she really enjoyed! Jamie looks forward to helping the Chamber and its members grow, as well as building relationships with the businesses in the community. She has a passion for people, design, photography and most recently gardening. 

Jamie has been married to her husband Alex for 2 years and they have a beautiful baby girl, as well as 2 loving labs and a horse.

Nearly 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Sundance has excellent wildlife watching and hunting opportunities for elk, deer, antelope, turkey and more. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and the South Dakota Black Hills are within an easy day trip while Yellowstone National Park lies a short day's trip from Sundance and that's just the beginning...

  • Devils Tower Exploring & Climbing - Take in America's first National Monument by lesiurely taking a stroll around one of the park's paved trails or make one of the most popular crack climbs in the world. Just 27 miles west of Sundance, Devils Tower is don't miss opportunity.

  • Fishing - Looking for blue ribbon trout streams or some good walleye fishing? Look no further than right here. Sand Creek, just 17 miles east of Sundance continues to provide premier fishing opportunities for rainbow and brown trout while walleye, northern pike, bass and crappie abound just 15 miles to the west of Sundance in Keyhole Reservoir. Cook Lake, just to the north of Sundance offeres a serene setting with excellant trout fishing for all ages.

  • Hiking & Biking - The Bearlodge Ranger District of the Black Hills National Forest boasts miles and miles of uncrowded trails with breathtaking views for the hiker, mountain biker or horseback rider. The Sundance trailhead are located within 1 mile of Sundance.

  • Golf - If it's world class golf you pine for, you'll find it here as well. The Sundance Country Club offers a beautiful 9 hole course that's sure to offer an excellent afternoon. The Golf Club at Devils Tower, located in Hulett just 42 miles from Sundance and 8 miles from the monument, is a premiere 18-hole course designed in the footprint of the Tower with breathtaking views in all directions. The Pine Haven Country Club offers a beautiful 9 hole course overlooking beautiful Keyhole Reservoir just 23 miles west of Sundance.
